Statement from J. Alex Kelly, ExcelinEd in Action National Legislative Director, on the Nevada Legislature’s approval of Senate Bill 555, which allows the Opportunity Scholarship plan to accept more students, and on the failure to initiate a statewide Education Savings Account program:
“It is disappointing that the desires of Nevada’s families for a statewide Education Savings Account program were not heard. As a result, too many families will not have the opportunity to find the right educational fit for their child’s unique needs. We will continue to work with parents and partners to fight for all families to have the power of choice.
“While we are disappointed that lawmakers failed to approve funding for Educational Savings Accounts, we appreciate the support to expand the popular and successful Opportunity Scholarship program.
“We thank Governor Brian Sandoval, Senator Michael Roberson and Assemblyman Paul Anderson for fighting diligently and tirelessly for Nevada families and students. Most of all, we thank the parents who shared their stories and their hopes. Their desire for all families to have the chance to find the right educational path for each child’s unique needs is inspirational.”
